Classic Morris Mini K (March 1969 – August 1971, Made only in Australia)

Morris Mini K (Ex Police Fleet model car)

Built in Australian by British Motor Corporation, in a factory based in Sydney at Zetland, New South Wales. At the time the Classic Morris Mini K car was advertised as the "Great Leap Forward". The Mini K ('K' standing for Kangaroo) had a 1098 cc engine and was the last round-nosed Classic Mini car model to be totally produced and manufactured in Australia. It was originally priced at $1,780 AUD. The Mini K was offered in 2-door saloon and a 2-door van body styles. It was distinctive in having wind-up windows and a swivelling quarter light in Leyland Clubman/Mk1 style externally hinged doors.
A small round sticker with a kangaroo logo was placed on the triangular panel between the door and the front body seam. Police Mini K fleet cars did not have any Kangaroo stickers on the side of the cars. All interior trim stitching was done only on Classic Mini K cars sold to puplic. Police fleet model cars had plain trim inside without any stitching.  The "Kangaroo" name was supposedly coined because it is claimed that a kangaroo can go all day without drinking which the advertisers used to emphasise the frugal fuel consumption and possibly a larger fuel tank.

The Police "Fleet Model" car was sold in a extremely low numbers to Police Department of only 250 units. Which probably makes it the rarest Classic Mini car of all. These Classic Mini K cars were never intended to be used as Highway Patrol cars, instead they were being used daily by NSW Police Department as "General duties" car. These Classic Mini K cars would transport paperwork from Police station to your local Court, as well as used for all general running around by Police Officers on a daily basis. Today as per Police Department, these rare and Classic Morris Mini K cars are a part of an Australian Heritage.

Most defiantly such a Classic and rare Morris Mini K car today belongs in a an Australian Motor Museum!
